Join us for a special performance of
Hungarian Roma Ensemble ROMANO KOKALO
at the Fenton Street Market
on Veterans Plaza in Downtown Silver Spring
Saturday June 30th at 2.30pm!
Romano Kokalo unites the musical traditions of Eastern-Central European Romas. All the complexity is there while the passion adds up. Their performance is based on a regular Hungarian gypsy string band (violin, viola, cimbalom and double bass). The improvising and soloist strength of the musicians is expressed in every piece, be it on the double bass or the violin and particularly by Kálmán Balogh's phenomenal virtuoso mastery on the cimbalom. (Wikipedia)
They represent the authentic percussion and vocal style (mouth percussion and pounding on tin cans or anything at hand) and a rousing rendition of genuine harmony and solo vocals. The singers not only sing: they pour oil on the fire they light on stage....metaphorically speaking, of course. Any minute they jump to dance, or take a water can to give extra beat; a flamboyant accompaniment to the percussion, cimbalom and double bass. No wonder the show is explosive - it features musicians with a wide range of musical repertoire, who have played in the best Hungarian bands and have travelled all around the world.
The spirit of Hungary in the heart of Silver Spring:
