AFI LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL
September 23 - October 12, 2009
Now in its 20th year, the annual AFI Latin American Film Festival showcases the best filmmaking from Latin America and, with the inclusion of films from Spain and Portugal, celebrates Ibero-American cultural connections. Always one of AFI's best-attended events, this year's festival promises to be the biggest yet, with over 30 films from nearly 20 different Latin American countries. Each year the list of films includes multiple award-winners, international festival favorites, local box-office hits and debut works by promising new talents. Special guests and after-parties will be announced in September.
The festival kicks off with its Opening Night film, Mexico's I'M GOING TO EXPLODE [Voy a Explotar], a New Wave-styled story of young lovers on the run, on Wednesday, September 23rd at the historic AFI Silver Theater in Silver Spring, Maryland, and continues through October 12. Highlights among the films confirmed so far include:
TONY MANERO, a disco-infused, murderous black comedy from Chile; DOG EAT DOG, a gritty crime thriller from Colombia; Uruguay's coming-of-ager ACNE and oddball love story GIGANTE, which won the Silver Bear at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival; Argentina's LION'S DEN and THE HEADLESS WOMAN, both of which screened in the Official Competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008; plus a free sneak preview of LATIN MUSIC USA, a four-part miniseries set to air on PBS later this fall.
Full schedule and ticketing info coming soon!
