
Founded in 1976, the Arts and Humanities Council is a non profit organization designated as Montgomery County's local arts agency. In 2002, the AHCMC disbursed over $1 million in grants and contributions to nonprofit organizations, artists and scholars to help fund cultural activities in the County. AHCMC funding is provided by Montgomery County Government, the Maryland State Arts Council, corporations, organizations and individuals.

Mission
The mission of the Arts and Humanities Council is to promote, support and expand cultural activities in the County and to help integrate them into the lives of all residents.
Goals
The Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County seeks to:
* increase awareness, visibility and understanding for the array of arts and humanities activities in the county
* foster a climate that encourages individual artists and scholars and strengthens cultural organizations
* encourage individuals and groups to develop and become involved in cultural events and programs, including those which celebrate the diversity of county residents
* foster partnerships to use regional and area resources effectively
* advocate for the arts and humanities with elected officials, funders, community leaders and educational institutions
* build a larger funding base for county cultural activities
