Most of the original structure's exterior has been retained and incorporated into the City Place Mall. The Art Deco/Modern facade represents a pioneering venture in retail trade when this major downtown retail company chose Silver Spring for establishing its first suburban department store. The business was highly successsful in the expanding suburban market. The building was constructed in 1947 with additional floors added in 1950.
