Winter and Spring 2011
It looks to be an exciting year at the studio and beyond.
The year begins with an exhibit and the return of Open Studio in January. Spring courses begin in March.
By popular demand, the introductory classes, Art of the Vessel and One-of-a-Kind Jewelry Design will be offered. Also, I will offer two, three day intensives: The Glass Onion: Layers of Imagery and Text plus a new course, Collage/Montage: Focus on Frit. New material will be presented in all of these classes.
In June, I will be a presenter at BeCon, a bi-annual conference at the Bullseye Glass Company, in Portland, Oregon. Shortly thereafter, I will return to the east coast to teach at the Studio of the Corning Museum of Glass. See details below.
For other opportunities to pursue your glass and art studies, see the Artist-to-Artist and/or Course Schedule pages on my website. Please use the registration form below, call or email the studio to reserve your space in class.
Visitors are welcome. Please call or email to arrange a studio visit.
Cheers,
Kari

The Glass Onion: Layers of Imagery and Text
Explore the narrative and painterly potential of kilnformed glass. Students will be introduced to a variety of expressive kilnforming techniques to enable the use hand-lettered text and images in their glasswork. This class will be of interest to artists such as printmakers, painters, poets, or anyone for whom imagery, layering and personal expression are desired elements. Working with Bullseye glass, frit, powder, and stringer, students will create pre-fired design elements to be used in subsequent glass projects, combined with other glass techniques and/or adapted to other media. Stenciling, sifting and sgrafitto with powders are some of the processes to be covered. Opacity, transparency, and design concepts will also be considered. Students will combine these kilnforming processes in a final project.
While basic kiln practices will be touched upon, the focus of the class will be on the expressive use of the materials and creating glass art based on the students signature work. Prior glass experience is beneficial but not required. Artists of other media are encouraged to enroll.
Dates: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, March 23, 24, 25
Time: 10am-4pm
Instructors: Kari Minnick, Laurie Siegel

Collage/Montage: Focus on Frit
*NEW
This class will expand on some of the processes introduced in the "Glass Onion". While this class is a natural follow-on to it's predecessor, it is power-packed on it's own and has no prerequisite.
Students will be introduced to expressive and painterly kiln forming techniques using an extensive palette of frit and powder to enable glass designs with brilliant color, rich surfaces and depth. Working with Bullseye glass, frit, powder, and multiple-firing processes, students will create pre-fired design elements to be used in subsequent glass projects, combined with other glass techniques and/or adapted to other media. Topics to be covered may include:
- realism and abstraction
- shading and contrast
- depth and layering strategies
- surface and relief texture
Students will combine these kiln forming processes in a final project.
While basic kiln practices will be touched upon, the focus of the class will be on the expressive use of the materials and creating glass art based on the students signature work. Prior glass experience is beneficial but not required. Artists of other media are encouraged to enroll.
Dates: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, May 4,5,6
Time: 10am-4pm
Tuition: $595
