Inclusive Theatre Companies Presenting Back to the Past and The Curious Dream
ArtStream and its actors with disabilities play with time in two original musical comedies opening in Silver Spring on April 26. Both family-friendly one-acts, Back to the Past and The Curious Dreamare productions of ArtStream’s inclusive theatre companies.
Back to the Past, directed by Natalie Zanin, takes place at Parawood Studios in 1936--an era of slinky gowns, fedoras and giant shoulder pads--and in 1984--an era of big hair, brand names and giant shoulder pads. Chorus gals, hair products and Hollywood dreams come together in this comedy that dispatches a movie detective to find a connection between 1936 and 1984.
The Curious Dream and the Travel Machine, directed by Michael Hovde and Emilia O'Connor, is the first play of ArtStream’s newest acting troupe. It focuses on Martin Colwater, a character who’s no longer inspired by life. Suddenly lost in the middle of a movie, Colwater’s only way out is to help the movie’s characters solve their problems. Hovde says, "It's a play about knowing your passion and finding value in pursuing it, even when nobody else sees that value."
ArtStream productions are created in workshop settings using improvisation. Roles are tailored to showcase each actor’s abilities. ArtStream Inc. is a group of artists who bring the healing powers of acting, music, dance and other creative experiences to people with disabilities or challenging life circumstances. ArtStream also works with seniors, veterans and children.
