New Silver Spring Parking Rates Reflect Revitalization
Responding to an increased demand for parking in downtown Silver Spring as the local economy continues to grow, the County is raising the parking rates in the Silver Spring Parking Lot District. Beginning April 1, 2006, a small increase will go into effect at all facilities except the new Town Square and Wayne Avenue Garages. These two facilities use Pay On Foot technology and the hourly rates charges there will remain unchanged. Here are the new rates:
On Street Parking and Metered Garages or Lots:
- Short Term Meters = 60 cents an hour
- Long Term Meters = 45 cents an hour
Cameron Street Cashiered Garage:
- Short Term Parking of 3 hours or less = 60 cents an hour
- Long Term Parking more than 3 hours = 45 cents an hour
Monthly Parking Permits (Parking Convenience Stickers:
- One Month PCS = $85
- Carpools continue to receive discounts, with deeper discounts offered to larger pools
Most of the parking rates in the Parking Lot District (PLD) have not been raised for 15 years. The short term meter rate has been in effect since 1978. In recent years, the PLD's revenues have not covered its expenses, requiring an annual transfer payment from the General Fund. The new rates will help the PLD better fund needed services with less reliance on outside funding.
