About Bandleader Rafael Ortiz
Rafael "Pole" Ortiz was born in Naranjito, Puerto Rico. He started singing at an early age of 8 for school programs. He was already a very good singer, singing folkloric (trova) music from the mountains (música típica) throughout neighborhoods of his hometown. At the age of 16, he began to sing guarachas, boleros y "música típica" with different local groups and other talent from towns nearby. Between the age of 18 and 25, Rafael Ortiz sang with different groups in Puerto Rico. On April 2003, Rafael joined the United States Army and while being stationed with the Army in different places he was able to continue his passion for the music with different groups in places like Georgia, Germany and Virginia. On January 2013, Rafael Ortiz formed his first orchestra named, Rafael Ortiz y El Tumbao Urbano. He has performed in many important events and well known venues such as The Salsa Room, Lucky Strike, Baltimore Salsa Congress, Taste of DC, Jazz and Salsa Festival in Richmond and the Puerto Rican Medical Society 2016 Annual Fundraiser Gala in El Paso, Texas to mention a few. Currently Rafael Ortiz is in the process of recording his first single called "Natural" which is expected to be released at the beginning of the year 2018.
